CALVIN Abueva sets his affinity with Terrence Romeo aside for now as Alaska and GlobalPort collide in the PBA Philippine Cup semifinals starting on Monday night at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Aces star, who made his Gilas Pilipinas debut together with his Batang Pier countepart during the Fiba Asia Championship last September, is focusing on his team’s bid to enter the finals.

“Talagang magaling,” Abueva said of Romeo. “(Pero) iba-ibang level talaga. Iba 'yung team at management, so talagang ibibigay mo talaga yung lahat para sa team mo, ‘di ba?”

“So wala muna (kaibi-kaibigan),” he was quick to add. “Semis na ‘to eh.”

Romeo earlier played down his matchup with Abueva, saying it’s not just his fellow national team rookie the Batang Pier need to stop in the best-of-seven series.

Abueva definitely feels the same way as the Batang Pier boast plenty of weapons aside from Romeo, with Stanley Pringle, Jay Washington and Joseph Yeo also capable of exploding at any given time.

“Hindi naman basta-basta magpapatalo 'yan kaya syempre lahat ng mga preparation at gagawin sa depensa, gagawin mo eh,” Abueva said.

And the Aces have never lacked in their buildup despite last seeing action on December 19, a 108-100 win over Barako Bull in their last game of the elimination round.

“Hindi naman kami (kinalawang),” Abueva said. “Go hard pa rin kami sa practice eh at 'yung mental (preparation) namin, naka-focus sa kung sino man ang kalaban sa semis.”

“Kaya itong semis na ito, talagang ibubuhos na, bago mag-finals,” he added.
