KIA still has a chance to grab No.1 PBA draft pick from Blackwater. Here's how
If things fall into place in the Governors Cup, KIA may end up getting the chance to grab Moala Tautuaa or whoever it desires with the No. 1 selection overall in the coming PBA rookie draft. Jerome Ascano/ Dante Peralta

THERE'S so much talk about expansion team Blackwater all but guaranteed the No. 1 pick in the coming PBA rookie draft and the prized selection going to Talk 'N Text owing to a previous trade transaction.

But don't forget: All is not lost for KIA Motors.

Based on unofficial calculations done by, the Manny Pacquiao-coached KIA team is the only other team outside Blackwater with a realistic chance of getting the top pick overall in a deep, talent-laden draft expected to be led by Moala Tautuaa, Bobby Ray Parks, Troy Rosario and Roi Sumang.

But for that to happen, certain things will have to happen in the season-ending PBA Governors Cup which kicks off on May 5.

To review, the order of picking in the 2015 rookie draft will now be determined by the finishes (final standings and not win-loss records) of the 12 teams in the current season, with the all-Filipino Philippine Cup accounting for 40 percent of the tabulation and the Commissioner's Cup and Governors Cup 30% each.

After the 'salamangkero' controversy involving Commissioner Chito Salud last season, the PBA board has also decided to do away with the draft lottery between the two worst teams of the season to determine the owner of the No. 1 pick.

After finishing at the bottom of the 12-team standings in each of the first two conferences of the season, Blackwater stands a good chance of owning the top pick in the 2015 draft.

On the other hand, KIA finished a rung higher in 11th place in both conferences.

To deny Blackwater the top pick overall, KIA must finish last in the coming Governors Cup and hope that its fellow expansion team finishes in ninth place or higher for the season-ending conference.

If that happens, the Carnival may yet get their hands on the highly touted Tautuaa or whoever they desire in the draft. Unlike Blackwater, KIA has so far resisted all temptations to give away its first-round pick in a trade.

However, there are doubts if KIA will finish at the bottom of the standings in the Governors Cup considering Pacman's team is bringing back dominant import PJ Ramos. It has also tapped a crack Asian reinforcement in Taiwanese shooter Jet Chang.
