Black refuses to be discouraged by Meralco's woeful record in all-Filipino conferences

MERALCO coach Norman Black knows their struggles in the PBA Philippine Cup over the past few seasons and he'd rather not dwell on it.

The Bolts have been in the bottom of the standings of the last two all-Filipino conferences, finishing at 11th with a 3-8 card last year while ending dead last with a 1-10 record in 2016.

But the grand-slam winning coach understands that the most important thing is finding a solution to their woes now as they dropped to 2-5 following the Bolts' 90-84 loss to the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

"Well I don’t want to think about the last couple of years. It’s a loss, it’s not something I’m happy about but what can I do about it at this point?" said Black after the game.

"We just got to keep trying, come back next game and win the game," he added.

Black found positives in his veterans as KG Canaleta and Reynel Hugnatan carried the fight for them but lacked support from their young guns as Chris Newsome, Baser Amer and Garvo Lanete were relatively quiet for the game.

"That’s what I would hope for (for young guys to step up)," Black continued.

"But once the game starts, the performances, you want those guys to play much, much better, you want to win all your games. You know, I’m out there looking at it just like you are. I wish they can play a lot better, I wish they can make their shots, I wish we can limit our turnovers, I wish we would not give up so many fastbreak points but we just got to keep working," he added.

The only thing that Black can do now is to be positive amid their struggles and hope that they get out of their funk soon.

"This is what I can do. I can come back to practice and continue working hard and try to win the next game. That’s all I can do. That’s coaching," he ended.
