Like Talk 'N Text, Alapag hopes new team Meralco will find a way to win soon enough
Teammates for seven years at Talk 'N Text, Jayson Castro and Jimmy Alapag of Meralco say it felt weird going up against each other in a PBA game. Jerome Ascano

JIMMY Alapag had a bittersweet encounter with Talk ‘N Text on Wednesday when his former team dealt Meralco a 105-91 beating in the PBA Philippine Cup.

While happy to have a chance to chat once again with his former teammates, the Bolts playmaker was disappointed to see his new team get off to a slow start like they did in their 92-90 loss to Blackwater.

“(Our performance) could've gotten a lot better,” Alapag admitted. “We really dug ourselves a hole early. They came out and made shots. Even little runs we tried in the second half, they continued to make shots.”

The former league MVP was limited to four points on just five attempts, and five assists in 17 minutes off the bench for Meralco, which led, 6-2, before allowing the Texters to turn the tables and zoom away.

Alapag admitted he felt weird playing against a team where he played his first 12 years in the league.

“I knew it's going to be weird, but it was great having the chance to talk to a lot of guys before the game started,” he said. “At the end of the day, we'll always be a family and nothing will change that. It's a new chapter and I'm trying my best to help Meralco win.”

Jayson Castro is still taken aback when he sees his longtime teammate wearing a different jersey.

“Sobrang parang di pa rin ako makapaniwala kasi sobrang tagal naming magkasama at the same time siya talaga ang nag-guide sa akin at nagturo kung paano maglaro as a point guard talaga,” said the TNT star, who teamed up with Alapag for seven years.

Like the Texters, who won for the second straight time, Alapag hopes his Bolts figure out how to finally win this season.

“Hopefully, we'll figure it out and get to the win column on Sunday,” he said, referring to their game against Barako Bull where they hope to register their first win after being winless in three outings.
