Garcia admits Rain or Shine players slacked without fiery Guiao to keep them in line

RAIN or Shine assistant coach Caloy Garcia felt the absence of head coach Yeng Guiao left the Elasto Painters slacking in their loss to Tropang TNT in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup on Monday night.

With Guiao serving out a one-game suspension for yelling invectives at the referees in their game against Mahindra last week, the E-Painters saw themselves on the back foot against the Texters from the get-go and never recovered.

“Siguro nagka-kumpiyansa sila na walang magagalit sa kanila,” Garcia said.

The Painters showed a sense of urgency in the third quarter when they went on a 13-1 run to pull within six points with over three minutes left in the period after trailing by as many as 18 points earlier in the period.

“Our defense wasn’t really there in the beginning, but there was some point in the third quarter where we played good defense and cut the lead down to six,” Garcia said.

The Painters, however, failed to sustain their gains as they fell behind by double digits anew.

That’s when Garcia did his best Guiao impersonation – to no avail.

“Nagalit ako when they (TNT) made that rally,” Garcia said. “I got mad at them because I felt frustrated as a coach because it was a simple instruction na hindi nila ginawa and that gave Talk ‘N Text momentum again.”

“But nawala siguro yung composure namin,” he added. “We became so erratic when Talk ‘N Text started hitting their shots and we just started turning the ball over. We gave up early.”
