ARNOLD Van Opstal excused himself from Day One of the Gatorade Draft Combine as he's recovering from a flu.

The 6-foot-9 slotman out of La Salle, part of the pool for the special draft, was the only one among the 55 rookie applicants to miss the activities on Wednesday at the Hoops Center.

The Gilas pool member did show up in the morning, but just to beg off from the activities.

Deputy commissioner Rickie Santos, though, required Van Opstal to submit a medical certificate to validate his excuse.

“Okay naman ‘yun,” Santos said. “Nagpunta naman at nagsabing (may sakit) siya.”

Technical staff Junior Bengua added that Van Opstal also has a few documents for the draft proper that need to be submitted before the deadline on Friday.
