Bolts overcome slow start to beat Painters and spoil James Yap’s milestone night

ANTIPOLO — Meralco bucked a sluggish start to edge Rain or Shine, 89-73, on Saturday in the PBA Governors' Cup at the Ynares Center. 

The Bolts rolled to their third straight win and spoiled a historic night for James Yap, who became a member of the league's elite 10,000-point club.

Import Allen Durham had 23 points and 23 rebounds to go with eight assists for the Bolts, who recovered after trailing for the most part of the first half.

"Our defense didn't really hold up in the beginning. So what we did in the second half was come out aggressive and it worked for us," said Meralco coach Norman Black.

Durham sparked the late rally, scoring 10 in the third quarter to help Meralco take a 68-61 lead.

Yap passed the 10-000-point mark by sinking a three-pointer with 49.3 ticks to go in the third period.

JD Weatherspoon had 19 points, 13 rebounds, two assists, two steals and four blocks for Rain or Shine.

Maverick Ahanmisi added 11 for the Elasto Painters, who suffered their second loss in three games.
