No rest for Alaska as Compton calls for practice to begin preparing for war vs Ginebra
"It’s playoff time, we don’t rest,” says Alaska coach Alex Compton. Jaime Campos

ALEX Compton relished Alaska ending up as the second seeded team heading into the PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals.

He doesn’t savor the prospect of facing seventh seeded Barangay Ginebra.

The Aces earned a twice-to-beat advantage against the Kings in the playoffs after grinding out a 94-89 win over Rain or Shine on Wednesday night at the Astrodome.

Shortly after, reality stuck the mild-mannered coach.

“It’s great we have a twice-to-beat, it’s not an advantage to play Ginebra,” he said during the post-game interview at the press room of the Astrodome.

“It’s an advantage to have a twice-to-beat as a format, it’s not an advantage to have Ginebra as an opponent.”

The Aces have a score to settle against the Kings, who ousted them in the quarterfinal phase of the season-ending Governors Cup. Ginebra was then the second-seeded team with a twice-to-beat edge against Alaska.

Now the roles have been reversed.

While they may have the advantage now, Compton still believes the playoffs is going to be tough considering the six teams – with the exception of top seed and defending champion San  Miguel – have been bunched closely together in the standings at the end of the eliminations.

“It’s the beauty of this conference,” said the Alaska coach. “Ginebra is 6-5 and we’re 7-4, so we’re like in different leagues and we’re obviously way so different. Of course, that’s obviously sarcasm. Teams are a couple of points and baskets away with the same record.”

Despite the hard-earned win, there’s no way the Aces are slowing down. Compton had scheduled a practice less than 24 hours after the team clinched the No. 2 seed.

“We have to get ready for Ginebra,” said the Alaska mentor. “It’s playoff time, we don’t rest.”
