Alex Cabagnot set for Feb. 23 return, but careful not to rush back into action

ALEX Cabagnot listened to some rock music while texting and talking to his teammates after San Miguel Beer practice at Acropolis gym on Thursday.

If the SMB star playmaker looks so relaxed and hardly eager to return to action as soon as possible, that's because he's confident that the Beermen will continue to pull through in his temporary absence in the PBA Philippine Cup.

Cabagnot has missed the last three games due to a plantar fasciitis injury in his foot, but he's hardly worried as the Beermen are back atop the standings with six wins in seven games.

"A lot of guys are stepping up," Cabagnot said in a chat with on the eve of their game against Blackwater on Friday. "That's just the makeup of our team: when somebody goes down, everybody will pull their own and get through it.”

Brian Heruela and Chico Lanete are among those who have filled the void left by Cabagnot, with the lattter hitting the go-ahead trey in the team's win over Magnolia last Sunday in Antipolo.

But even though the Beermen have coped well in his absence, don't think Cabagnot is not itching to suit up again.

"Yeah, of course," the 35-year-old combo guard said. "I go to practice and do some light shooting, some stuff. Whatever I can do, I'm doing."

"But it's about getting as much rest and letting the fascia attach," he was quick to add. "I'm putting premium on that. I don't want to do anything that's going to be detrimental in the long run."

It seems his return is going to be earlier than expected thanks to a recent platelet-rich plasma (PRP) procedure.

"It's getting a lot better now," Cabagnot said. "We expedited the process with PRP. They said three weeks after PRP and it's only been two, so hopefully in the next couple of weeks, I can come back on the floor."

Cabagnot is targeting February 23 as his return date when the Beermen face Kia.

"Hopefully earlier... but we're taking it day by day, week by week," Cabagnot said.
