ALASKA sustained its momentum by dealing Ginebra a 101-86 beating in a highly anticipated PBA Philippine Cup game that failed to live up to its billing on Sunday night.

The Aces zoomed to an early lead and never let up as they cruised to the blowout victory before a huge Smart-Araneta Coliseum crowd that enjoyed Star’s eight-point win over Rain or Shine in the opening game.

RJ Jazul and Calvin Abueva led four players who scored in double figures for the Aces, who registered their third straight win after starting the season with two losses, while handing the Gin Kings their third loss in five games.

“I’m actually a little surprised with the result,” Aces coach Alex Compton said. “I was prepared to be radically stressed out, but I really thought there were large stretches where our guys defensive effort in the half court, particularly, we did a great job.”

After all, the Aces held the Gin Kings to just 39-percent shooting after making just 30 of their 76 shots, while Alaska buried 40 of their 78 tries for a solid 51 percent.

On offense, Jazul showed the way with 16 points, three assists, and two boards in 25 minutes off the bench, while Abueva added 12 points, five caroms, two assists, one steal, and one block in just 17 minutes as they had the luxury to rest after maintaining a double-digit lead that grew to as many as 30 points.

Kevin Ferrer emerged as the lone bright spot for the Gin Kings, scoring in double digits for the second straight game as the rookie forward ended up with a game-high 19 points built around five three-pointers, along with four boards in 30 minutes off the bench.

Japeth Aguilar, coming in as the Gin Kings’ scoring leader, was held to just 12 points and zero rebound in 22 minutes.
