Alaska trio's stint with Gilas a win-win situation for club and country, says Alas

ALASKA assistant coach Louie Alas has no doubt that Aces management will continue its all-out support to Gilas Pilipinas in future international tournaments.

After all, he believes the exposure the Aces’ national team representatives have gained in the Fiba Asia Championship will augur well for their mother club’s campaign in the upcoming PBA season.

“If that will happen again, tingin ko ganun ulit ang magiging decision ng Alaska,” Alas told Spin.ph.

Alas lauded Calvin Abueva, Dondon Hontiveros, and Sonny Thoss for living up to their specific roles for the national team that fell just short of a Fiba Asia championship and a ticket to the Rio Olympics next year.

“Si Sonny, alam niyang reliever siya,” Alas began explaining. “Si Dondon, every time na ma-libre siya, kailangan niyang tumira, tapos ang galing pa niya mag-pressure (defense). Then si Calvin, talagang walang iniisip kundi maglaro lang, talagang nag-eenjoy siya maglaro for the national team, kaya very impressive.”

The Aces also released coach Alex Compton to be one of coach Tab Baldwin’s deputies to become tied with Talk ‘N Text as the teams with most representatives in the national side.

Their experience, Alas feels, will translate into confidence they will flaunt for the Aces, who just came up short of a championship in two conferences last season.

“Yung kumpiyansang makukuha mo dun, hindi yun natuturo eh,” Alas said. “Si Calvin, ang laking maturity ang nakuha niya dun. Si Dondon, yung leadership niya lalong (nag-improve). Si Sonny naman, talagang very reliable reliever.”

“So it will benefit Alaska, at the same time, naglaro sila para sa bayan.”
