ALASKA accomplished in overtime what it failed to do in regulation as it frustrated Barangay Ginebra, 109-100, to register in the win column of the PBA Governors’ Cup on Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Aces squandered a sizeable lead in the fourth quarter, but an avalanche of three-pointers in the extra session allowed them to regain firm command for good and suddenly cruise to the victory, which tied their victims with a 1-1 win-loss record.

LaDontae Henton sparked the overtime surge with a triple, before JVee Casio and the returning Calvin Abueva knocked down one each in that telling stretch that took the fight out of the Gin Kings, who threatened despite missing Justin Brownlee in the endgame due to cramps.

Still, the Gin Kings import registered a game-high 31 points and 13 boards on top of two steals in just 29 minutes in his debut.

“Ginebra showed great resolve,” Aces coach Alex Compton said. “We were kind of in control early and they just kept coming and coming…but our guys held the fort.”

Alaska shot 44 percent from three-point range on 15 of 34 shooting.

Henton’s run-sparking trey made up for a scoreless fourth quarter as he finished with a team-high 29 points and missed a double-double by one rebound, while not committing a single turnover in 33 minutes on the floor.

Chris Banchero chipped in 19 points, five steals, three assists, and three boards, while RJ Jazul added 14 markers, including two from the free-throw line that sent the game into overtime.

Abueva, who rested in the Aces’ opening game, provided a huge boost as usual with 12 points, 10 boards, and three assists in 27 minutes.

Sol Mercado and LA Tenorio shone offensively, with 22 and 13 points respectively, while Dave Marcelo delivered on a crucial defensive play for the Gin Kings.
