CALVIN Abueva has come to accept his fate at Alaska.

For now, all his focus is on earning a spot in Gilas Pilipinas' final lineup for the third window of the FIBA World Cup qualifier, where matches against Australia and Chinese-Taipei await.

"Yung binigay sa akin (suspension), tanggap ko na naman kung ano yung mangyayari," said Abueva Monday night after making his first public appearance at Gilas Pilipinas practice since being meted an indefinite suspension by Alaska management for his unexplained absence.

"Pero dito siyempre ibang usapan ito. Iba rin ang dapat gawin dito," added the eccentric forward, who now sports a bald pate.

Unlike his being a no-show at Alaska's practice last week, Abueva was among the early brids in Gilas' weekly practice as he banters with teammates Terrence Romeo, Carl Bryan Cruz, and Jayson Castro at the sidelines while waiting for training to start.

Abueva was still his old playful self inside the court, dunking the ball at every opportunity, and sharing a laugh every now and then with Andray Blatche as if he's not going through what he described as a 'personal, family problem.'

Notwithstanding the indefinite suspension meted on him by his mother ballclub, the 30-year-old Abueva was still allowed by Alaska team owner Wilfred S. Uytengsu to play for Gilas should coach Chot Reyes opted to include him as part of his roster for the next window of the qualifier slated in Chinese Taipei (June 29) and at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan (July 2).

Abueva welcomes the window of opportunity left for him.

"Allowed naman ako dito e. Siyempre, may responsibilidad ako rito na dapat kong gampanan as a national player," said the native of Angeles, Pampanga.

"Tsaka sa personal problem labas dapat ito."

Despite not practicing with Alaska for more than a week, Abueva swears he keeps himself in shape, saying he had time shooting basketballs during the stretch where he was basically physically detached from the team.

"Nakakahawak naman ako ng bola, nakaka pag shooting din naman," he said, "Hindi naman nawawala yung kundisyon ko. Kailangan lang natin ng kaunting (mataas na) level ng kundisyon ng katawan. Kailangan nating i-shape yung katawan natin."

With nothing to keep himself busy these days, Abueva said priority for now is to make Gilas' final cut for the next window of the qualifiers.

"This is the third window, papasok na ng second round kaya huwag na nating sayangin ito," he said.
