GETTING traded from Globalport to Barangay Ginebra is like a full-time promotion for rookie Julian Sargent.
“I’m blessed to be here,” he said of being part of the PBA’s most popular ballclub following the one-on-one deal that sent him to the Kings from the Batang Pier in exchange for guard Paolo Taha.
“I just want to prove my worth to the coach, the community, and to all the players. I just want to help the team win as much as possible.”
The trade was the second in Sargent’s young pro career.
He was originally taken by Magnolia in the second round (16th overall) of last year’s draft, but was quickly shipped to Globalport along with two other second-round picks for first-round selection Robbie Herndon (No. 6) and Gian Abrigo.
Sargent actually, was part of coach Pido Jarencio’s second unit at Globalport and was doing well in his off-the-bench role until the surprise trade came along.
“I was really surprised (with the trade),” he said looking back.
Unfortunately though, the rookie out of La Salle has yet to play his first game with the Kings as he’s currently recuperating from the shoulder injury he suffered while still with Globalport.
He’s still undergoing rehab but diligently attends Ginebra’s daily practices.
“I know it’s under a not-so-good circumstances (trade) because I’m injured, but I told coach (Tim Cone) that I’m ready once my injury healed,” said the Fil-Am player.
“I’m injured but I’m with the team in spirit,” he added. “So I just want to get back as soon as possible and help the team as much as I can.”
The Kings are currently battling top seed Rain or Shine in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup semifinals. In the event the team reached as far as the finals, Sargent hopes he’ll finally get to play for Ginebra.
“It’s day-to-day. We’re trying to get back as soon as possible,” stressed Sargent. “That’s what we’re planning, play for this conference.”
