MVP teams hold edge over Ang ballclubs in PBA rivalry

    Feb 19, 2013

WEDNESDAY has Petron Blaze facing Meralco in the second game of the 2013 PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

It is the first time a San Miguel Corporation ballclub will be facing a PLDT-Smart team in the conference, or a first showdown in the tournament between the teams of rival owners Ramon S. Ang and Manny V. Pangilinan.

The showdown is also the 111th overall for the rival camps since MVP gained control of a second team, Meralco, to add to the flagship Talk 'N Text franchise starting in the 2010-11 season.

Aside from Talk ‘N Text winning a third straight all-Filipino title in the Philippine Cup, perhaps only a few are aware that MVP’s Tropang Texters and Meralco Bolts also posted an 8-1 overall record against RSA’s San Mig Coffee, Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Petron Blaze squads in the all-Filipino conference.

Last season, the warring ballclubs’ head-to-head record was pretty close, 25-24 in favor of the MVP group.

Two seasons ago, when Meralco entered the league, it was 27-25, with MVP’s teams also with the advantage.

That means the three-season head-to-head tally is now 60-50 in favor of MVP’s teams going into Wednesday’s Petron-Meralco game.

Interestingly, the Petron-Meralco game features the two shortest imports in a conference that has no height limit – 6-6 Renaldo Balkman of the Boosters and 6-7 13/16 Eric Dawson of the Bolts.

As if that’s not enough, both imports were born a week apart – Dawson on July 7, 1984 and Balkman a week later.
