TOP Philippine sports patron Manny V. Pangilinan on Thursday was quick to deny that he has suffered a stroke contrary to rumors that spread in the business community on New Year's Eve.

“No, I’m not (sick). I’m good,” said Pangilinan in a text message to Spin.ph.

The Gilas Pilipinas godfather and backer of other major sports disciplines admitted he is exhausted from work, but insisted that he is looking forward to another exciting new year.

“Tired yes, but I am looking forward to a better and exciting new year,” he said.

A high-ranking official of the Metro Pacific Investments Corp. which Pangilinan heads said he is no longer surprised by the rumors, saying it was not the first time the top sports patron has become the subject of such talk.

“Lagi namang nare-report na ganyan si boss. Wala nga akong alam na na-stroke siya gaya dati nung una 'yang lumabas,” said the head of one company under the MVP umbrella.

“Kahit naman 'yung ibang kilalang businessmen, nababalita rin na may sakit kahit wala. Di ba si Lucio Tan lang, ilang beses nang nabalita na may grabeng sakit … Hindi naman pala totoo,” he added.

The same official bared that Pangilinan undergoes an annual executive check-up and just recently also went through the series of medical examinations in the US.

Concern over the rumors was understandable, considering Pangilinan, 69, is not only among the most important businessmen in the country but the biggest backer of Philippine sports from the business sector.

He is the outgoing head of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and, by January, will be leading the Philippine bid to host one of three wildcard qualifiers for the Olympic basketball tournament.

His MVP Sports Foundation also supports other sports like volleyball, boxing, cycling, taekwondo, badminton, tennis, and football, among others.
