GARY David used to lose when he had an off night.
Gone are those days.
Caught in a poor shooting night on Wednesday, the superstar guard was glad to have gained significant help from his teammates, none more than fellow triggerman John Wilson as Meralco came away with a 72-64 come-from-behind win over San Mig Coffee in the PLDT myDSL-PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
David was seated on the bench when Wilson fueled the Bolts’ fightback from 18 points down by dropping 19 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter, just four points shy of matching the Mixers’ total output in the period.
“Si John noon pa magaling na player at defender yan,” David beamed. “Siya `yung ka-partner ko diyan na pag nag-struggle ako, nandyan siya. Pag nag struggle siya, nandito lang ako.”
“Ganun naman talaga. Hindi mo naman masabi na maganda laro mo. Siguro konting adjustment lang,” added David, who was also proud of his other teammates like Reynel Hugnatan and Jared Dilinger, who also stepped up on the offensive end
“Struggling yung first five pero nandun pa rin `yung puso ng team,” David said as Hugnatan and Dilinger combined for 14 points in the final quarter to complement Wilson. “Dun mo makikita `yung team effort. Kung may nag-struggle na isa, may mag step-up.”
David finished with just five points behind a 2-of-11 shooting from the field.
