LUCENA - 'Healing priest' Fr. Joey Faller stole the llimelight during the Shooting Stars side event of the PBA All-Star here after draining a 'Hail Mary' shot from midcourt to win the competition for his team.
The game-winner allowed Faller and teammates Julius Ayangco and Barangay Ginebra guard LA Tenorio to beat the trio headed by TnT Katropa big man Ranidel de Ocampo on Friday night at the Quezon Convention Center.
Miracle shot? Not really, said Fr. Faller, a self-confessed basketball addict.
"Pina-practice ko talaga yung malalayo. Hindi ako nagpa-practice ng malapit," he related to SPIN.ph. "Kanina puro malalayo ang tira ko before coming here."
Fr. Faller missed the first shot of his team from just 10 feet, making him all the more determined to convert the basket from midcourt.
"Napahiya kasi ako nung una, yung tira ko sablay," he said.
He has a basketball court constructed at the Via Dolorosa Grotto, otherwise known as the Kamay ni Jesus, located in Lucban, Quezon. It's where he usually plays and practices shooting from midcourt.
"Doon ako kadalasan naglalaro para makundisyon na rin," he said.
Fr. Faller said he is a San Miguel and Barangay Ginebra fan, and having Tenorio for his teammate made the victory even more special.
"Siyempre ayaw ko rin siyang mapahiya," he said of the popular Ginebra point guard.
