Miller believes it's only a matter of time until Mikey gets going

Mikey Williams' game timing still needs work, but Willie Miller is confident he'll get there in time

CONVERGE deputy coach Willie Miller knows Mikey Williams isn't quite in game shape just yet, but he believes it won't be long until the Fil-Am guard regains his old playing form once the PBA Commissioner's Cup goes along.

Sure, his timing may be a bit off, but Williams remains the deadly scorer that he is.

"Yung shooting niya andun pa rin. Hindi pa rin nawala," noted the two-time MVP.

“Tingin ko yung timing lang talaga ang kulang pa sa kanya.”

What the 48-year-old Miller can assure, though, is that he’ll make sure Williams will get back in the same playing shape he was while with TNT.

Williams helped the squad win two championships in his two-year stint before leaving for the US after failing to reach a new contract deal with the franchise.

"Ikukundisyon natin yan,” said Miller, who is tasked to handle the backcourt roster of the FiberXers which includes Williams, rookie Juan Gomez De Liano, Alec Stockton, Kurt Reyson, MJ Garcia, and Archie Concepcion.

“Sa mga guard ako ang assigned. Sa big men, si DI (Danny Ildefonso) diyan,” said the guard out of Letran, who suited up for the Rookies/Sophomores during the All-Star weekend in Candon City, Ilocos Sur.

Williams arrived in the country last week from the US and joined the Converge practice a day or two later.

He was acquired by the FiberXers last year in a trade with TNT for Jordan Heading.

"Nagpapa-kundisyon naman siya sa US. Madalas din daw siyang maglaro sa mga pick up games. Minsan may mga former NBA players pa siyang nakakalaro," Miller shared.

"Pero siyempre, iba pa rin talaga yung competitive games."

At the same time, Miller is aware of the questions on how the FiberXers will get everyone touches behind the star-studded roster they currently have in De Liano, Abueva, Stockton, Williams, Justine Baltazar, Justin Arana, Jonnel Policarpio, and 7-foot import Kylor Kelley.

“Sabi nga ni Gov (coach Delta Pineda) good problem yan. In time, pag nakuha na yung chemistry ng team, tingin ko hindi naman yan magiging problema,” said Miller, adding teams with powerhouse rosters such as San Miguel, TNT, and Barangay Ginebra have managed to thrive and win despite their high-profiled cast.
