MIKEY Williams was one of the main guys during his career with TNT, but at Converge, he is expected by the coaching staff to become of the leaders of a team needing veteran presence in order to go deep into the playoffs.

The 34-year-old Williams is embracing the role since Converge already has a good, young core that helped the FiberXers become one of the most promising teams in the league.

“They already have a great foundation from guards to bigs,” Williams said after his first game with Converge on Wednesday. “I’m just trying to insert myself where I see fit.”

“I know I have to take a bit of a leadership role with this group. I know the coaches are asking me to be more vocal, just from my experiences I’ve gathered with my previous team,” added the two-time PBA champion and Finals MVP.

He did not waste time embracing that role during Converge’s match-up against Macau Black Knights as he was seen talking to the likes of Archie Concepcion and MJ Garcia during timeouts.

“I’m just trying to bring that in and help the guys as best as I can, just keep being a pinball that they can just come to if they need information or if I need information from there to learn how certain things go here because it’s a different atmosphere, different culture, and it’s new,” said Williams.

Despite the role change, fans can’t help but expect Williams to be the same high-scoring guard that led to a Rookie of the Year and First Mythical Team award in 2021.

Williams said in due time, it could come with more time with the team.

“I’m still learning the offense,” Williams said. “I’ve only been here seven days. But I know we have a great import in Kyler (Kelley), great young guys in Justin (Arana), Balti (Baltazar), Juan (Gomez de Liano), Alec (Stockton), and a lot of other supporting cast. I just tried to feed of them, just do the best I could to play within the offense, just make the right decisions.”

“I’m not going to rush. It’s just my first game back. I’ve got a long season. I will come when it comes, if it comes,” he added.
