MIKE Harris and Romeo Travis are not intent on winning the Best Import award even though the two are in contention for that individual award.
Harris and Travis are strong contenders for the best reinforcement for the PBA Governors’ Cup after leading their respective teams to the finals which will start on December 5 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Harris averaged 29.82 points and 21.73 rebounds for Alaska during the elimination round, while Travis had 22.73 points and 15.09 rebounds for Magnolia.
But for the two imports, the award is the last thing on their mind.
“I know people always talk about that, best import and all that stuff, but no one person on this team is going to be more valuable than the other,” said the 35-year-old Harris. “I couldn’t care about that award. As you get older, championships are way more important.
Travis echoed Harris’ statement as he came home empty-handed after winning the Best Import award while playing for Alaska in the 2015 Governors’ Cup.
“The Best Import award is more for you guys (media) than it is for us,” Travis said. “As you can see, I’ve won the Best Import award and we lost the championship. And I got on the plane more upset than I would have been if I had not won Best Import and lost the championship.”
Harris said concentrating on an individual accolade and his match-up with Travis will definitely be detrimental to the team especially for Alaska.
“For me, I don’t think about that. You may have an opinion on it but for me, it’s not an individual matchup. If my focus is on him, I will lose the concept of what it takes to be a great teammate and help my teammates win. I’m not worried about the one-on-one match-up. I’m worried about the wins,” said Harris.
Travis said being a candidate for the Best Import award is due to his teammates’ trust in him.
“To me, I honestly don’t care about the award. I just want to win the championship and without my teammates, I wouldn’t even be considered for that award because honestly, I don’t feel like, in the beginning of the conference, I played well enough to be considered for that.
“Without my teammates carrying me through the first four, five games, I wouldn’t be considered,” he added.
