THE good news: Jeremiah Gray's surgery on the assortment of injuries on his damaged right knee was successful.

The bad news: The sophomore guard will be out for the entire Season 48 of the PBA.

San Miguel Corporation (SMC) sports director Alfrancis Chua said it’s certain Gray would skip the league’s coming two-conference calendar as he recovers from the harrowing injuries he suffered on the final day of the PBA On Tour last July 30.

    COLUMN: My, oh, Miah

Incidentally, Gray turned 26 on Wednesday (August 16).

“Tapos na yung operation niya. OK naman,” said Chua, who is also Barangay Ginebra board of governor.

The SMC top official said the operation done on Gray was held last Monday (August 14).

“Lahat-lahat na yun kasama ACL,” added Chua.

    Multiple ligament tears

Initial test had Gray diagnosed with a dislocated knee, but further checkups on the swollen knee revealed he didn’t only suffer an ACL tear, but also tears on his PCL (posterior cruciate), and MCL (medial collateral).

This marks the second time Gray went down with a serious knee injury.

Last November 2021, he suffered the same injury after a dunk during a TNT game in the PBA 3x3 Season 1.

The incident forced him to miss the season-opening Philippine Cup, where he was acquired by Barangay Ginebra in a trade with Terrafirma, which selected him No. 2 overall pick in the rookie draft despite his health condition.

Ten months following the operation, the 6-foot-5 Fil-Am was finally cleared and suited up for the Kings. He later played a pivotal role in the Commissioner’s Cup championship win against guest team Bay Area Dragons, and in the runner-up finish in the Governors’ Cup to TNT.

Still, Ginebra remains optimistic of Gray recovering well and resuming a very promising pro career.

“He has a bright career ahead of him and we’re all pulling and praying for Miah,” said deputy coach Richard del Rosario. “Importante is for him to get better.”
