BASER Amer drained two crucial three-pointers in the second overtime as Meralco completed a 126-123 comeback over NorthPort on Friday in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Amer's back-to-back three-pointers triggered an 8-0 start to the second overtime to cap a big fightback by the Bolts, who overhauled a six-point deficit in the final 33 seconds of regulation.
By ending a three-game losing streak, Meralco improved to 3-5 (win-loss) and got back in the hunt for a quarterfinals spot.
“That was a hard-fought game between two teams that are fighting for their lives to stay in the playoffs, especially us,” said a relieved Meralco coach Norman Black.
Newsome scored 28 points including two points on an alley-oop basket off an inbound pass by Nards Pinto that sent the game into overtime and capped the Bolts' comeback from a 106-100 deficit.
Amer added 23 points for the Bolts, who stayed alive in the second overtime when Nico Salva hit a hook shot inside the lane with 34.8 seconds left.
“I’m just happy that the players never gave up. There were stretches in the fourth quarter that looked dim for us. But we were able to execute plays to send the game into overtime and give ourselves a chance to win in double overtime,” Black said.
Stanley Pringle dropped 33 points in his first game after serving a one-game suspension while Sean Anthony had 31 points and 16 rebounds, but that was not enough to save the Batang Pier [2-4] from a fourth straight loss.
