EVERYBODY knows Josh Davis was the second choice as the Meralco Bolts' import in the PBA Commissioner's Cup.

But so far, he's proving second to none.

The hard-working import once again stood out on Wednesday, scoring 31 points in leading the Meralco Bolts to a 92-87 come-from-behind win over Rain or Shine at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Davis scored 15 points in the fourth quarter alone, when the Bolts finished the game with a 22-4 flurry to put away their fourth win is as many matches and take on the unfamiliar role as league leaders.

“Give credit to Josh Davis for coming up with a big offensive night," said Meralco coach Norman Black, who signed Davis after original choice Michael Dunigan opted to sign with Ginebra.

"I know people have been criticizing his offense, but today ,we put him in a good position where he can score inside,” he added.

By going 4-0 (win-loss), Meralco matched the best start to a conference in franchise history which it first pulled off in 2011, and did so by beating top teams Rain or Shine, Talk 'N Text, and Ginebra.

“Our ability to beat the best teams in the league, that for us is a big step,” added the one-time grand slam champion coach.

However, Black said he is expecting rough sailing in the coming weeks, especially when Meralco faces other powerhouse squads like defending champion Purefoods Star, Alaska and newly-minted Philippine Cup champion San Miguel Beer.

Veteran guard Mike Cortez played a solid supporting role for Davis after pouring in seven of his 13 points in the final quarter, to go along with eight assists for the Bolts, who razed a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter.

Gary David added 11, while Cliff Hodge chipped in 10 for the Bolts.

Rick Jackson banged in 22 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for Rain or Shine, which saw its two-game winning streak come to an end and fell to an even 2-2.
