MERALCO is closing in on a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals, but coach Norman Black says they simply can’t relax because they can easily slide down the leaderboard in the final stretch of the eliminations.
The Bolts overcame Alaska to gain a share of second spot with the Aces with a 7-2 win-loss slate behind Rain or Shine at 8-1.
While Meralco holds the tiebreaker if they are still tied after eliminations, Black says they need to secure wins in their two remaining elimination-round games.
“We are not there yet,” said Black. “We have two more games left against Talk ‘N Text and Rain or Shine.”
TNT, in fourth place with a 6-3 slate, is also in the hunt for a twice-to-beat advantage.
“Fortunately for us, those are two teams that are up with us or ahead of us. We still control our own fate. But we have to win. If you don’t win, you can go down as quickly as when we went up,” said Black.
The Bolts coach says defense is still the main focus as they try to move up the standings.
“Alaska came into this game scoring 108 points a game and we only give up 87. So my feeling is that something is going to give here. It’s either we will have a great defensive game or they will have a great offensive game.
“We just want to come out in the better end of it by playing defense. That’s what is keeping us in games anyway,” said Black.
