GARY David led a crippling third-quarter offensive as Meralco blew past fellow also-ran GlobalPort, 123-95, to end a failed PBA Governors Cup campaign on a high note on Saturday at the Alonte Sports Arena in Binan, Laguna.
David rediscovered his shooting touch against his former team, pumping in 10 of his personal conference-high 33 points during a pivotal 17-4 third quarter blitz that all but wrapped up the Bolts' third win in nine games in the season-ending conference.
David, who will take a short breather before resuming his individual training in time for Gilas Pilipinas’ international stints starting in July, buried six three-pointers while adding four assists and three rebounds against a Batang Pier team that traded him last season.
Import Mario West registered the second triple-double for this conference after finishing with 30 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists.
The Bolts ended the season with their second ninth-place finish this season. Meralco also placed ninth in the season-opening Philippine Cup before placing seventh in the Commissioner’s Cup, coming nowhere close to a championship in its fourth season in the league.
On the other hand, the Batang Pier closed out their Governors Cup stint with seven straight losses to wind up at 1-8.
It is the second straight last place finish for Globalport since rookie coach Pido Jarencio took over before the start of the Commissioner’s Cup.
GlobalPort has posted a woeful 14-57 win-loss record in two PBA seasons.
