MERALCO held San Miguel Beer to a single field goal in overtime to pull off a 106-95 victory in their PBA Governors Cup match on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Andre Emmett, who missed a potential game-winning shot in regulation play, banged in six points in extra time, including one off a difficult spin move that gave the Bolts an inexorable 104-93 lead.
But more than Emmett's baskets, it was defense that turned the match around as Meralco held San Miguel to 1-of-7 shooting in overtime while forcing the reigning Philippine Cup champion to five turnovers.
“It’s a good bounce back game for us because we didn’t play well against GlobalPort,” said Meralco coach Norman Black, whose team was coming off a 92-73 loss to Batang Pier on opening day.
“We just want to get on track again.”
While Emmett led the Bolts again with 31 points, the biggest story was the re-emergence of Gary David, who erupted for 23 points before fouling out in overtime.
Rey Guevarra came off the bench to add 11 points while Reynel Hugnatan and Cliff Hodge chipped in 10 points each to help Meralco overhaul an 11-point first half deficit to deal SMB a second straight loss.
Meralco’s Iranian import Benny Koochoie failed to play for the second straight game as his clearance from his mother team in the Iranian league arrived only on Saturday morning.
But the Beermen couldn't capitalize, tumbling to yet another defeat just three days after an embarrassing 78-83 defeat decision to expansion team KIA Motors.
June Mar Fajardo finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds but import Arizona Reid had another anemic night, finishing with just 13 points on a woeful 4-of-15 shooting from the field.
