MERALCO banked on a hot start as it frustrated Rain or Shine, 109-102, to get back on track in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Wednesday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Clicking on all cylinders after the All-Star break, the Bolts started the game scoring 16 unanswered points that sparked the one-sided result and snapped their two-game losing streak to improve to a 3-2 win-loss record.
Allen Durham showed he’s adjusting better to a new mask that’s protecting a broken nose as he churned out 32 points, 12 boards, five assists, two blocks, and two steals to lead the Bolts, who halted the E-Painters’ two-game win streak as their victims dropped to 2-2.
“It was really the first quarter that set the tone,” Bolts coach Norman Black said. “It also helped a great deal that Allen played a great game today.”
Durham conspired with Chris Newsome in the first period, where they combined for 20 of the team’s 35 points to nearly match the Elasto Painters’ entire output in the quarter.
Bryan Faundo, Cliff Hodge, Jared Dillinger, and the returning Baser Amer also scored in double figures, while Jimmy Alapag added nine makers and seven assists as he orchestrated the Bolts’ offense with aplomb.
Dior Lowhorn tallied 25 points and eight boards to pace the E-Painters, who cut the lead to just five in the second period only to allow Meralco to make another run and put up double-digit leads.
The E-Painters trimmed it anew to just seven points in a late comeback that proved too little too late.
