MAVERICK Ahanmisi honored his late grandfather by writing “RIP PAPANG 1935-2017” on his white shoes and putting on a solid performance for Rain or Shine in its 82-79 win over TNT KaTropa on Friday night.
Hours before tipoff, the US-raised Filipino-Nigerian playmaker posted a heartfelt message on his Instagram account about his grandfather, Rizal Neyra Frankera, who recently passed away at age 82.
Then he offered his game to his grandfather from his mother's side, tallying nine points, five rebounds, one assist, and one steal in 22 minutes off the bench in the E-Painters grind-out win.
The grieving Ahanmisi scored his team’s last two points from the charity stripe that proved to be enough cushion before Kelly Williams knocked a wide-open trey.
“I think tanggap naman niya kasi matanda na rin yung grandfather niya. He played okay naman today,” ROS coach Caloy Garcai said of Ahanmisi’s performance.
Garcia said Ahanmisi is leaving on Saturday for the US to attend his grandfather’s burial, before returning in time for the E-Painters next game against Blackwater.
