THROW anything you want to throw them at them - ‘kangkong,' ‘Bora Cup,’ anything.
Nothing piques them anymore.
After more than a decade of playing for Ginebra and getting ridiculed with taunts and memes during the course of an eight-year title-less run, Mark Caguioa and Jayjay Helterbrand said they've come to get used to all the heckling from rival fans.
Caguioa shared that while people are putting in a lot of effort and time in making all those memes mocking the Gin Kings, he doesn’t waste even a single second stressing about them.
“Minsan nga, 'yung mga memes na ginagawa nila sa akin, akala siguro nila naaasar ako. Pero wala sa akin ‘yun eh,” said the one-time PBA MVP.
Helterbrand said they use the taunts as motivation.
“Sa akin its more fun, it's boring if everybody’s on your side. If they call us “kangkong” or “Bora Cup” okay lang,” said Helterbrand, who’s on his 17th year with Ginebra. “Actually it motivates us to play harder, its something that pushes us to do better.”
Still, the 'Fast and Furious find extra satisfaction in being able to shut haters up, as evidenced by Caguioa's now iconic 'Wala ng kangkungan' shout after the Gin Kings ended the championship drought by beating Meralco in last season's PBA Governors Cup Finals.
'The Spark' found another opportunity to take a jab at haters on Tuesday night, after a seventh-seeded Ginebra side made it all the way to the Philippine Cup Finals by beating the Star Hotshots in Game Seven of their semifinal playoff.
"Kangkungin n'yo mukha n'yo," he laughed at the end of the Game Seven win.
Turning serious, Caguioa added: “No, no, there's nothing more they could say to this team ... Ano pa ba ang masasabi nila sa team na ‘to? Ano pa ba ang makakantiyaw nila sa team na ito?”
Now that they’re back on the Finals, Helterbrand knows there's only way to stop the haters from dishing more dirt on the team.
“The best way to shut people up is winning,” he said. “Its hard to talk trash back at them, it’s never right anyway, but when they call you kangkong and send you to Bora Cup and then you win, wala na sila masasabi sayo.”
With that, let the finals begin.
