OBVIOUSLY Greg Slaughter won’t be around, but good old Mark Caguioa is going with Barangay Ginebra in the PBA Philippine Cup bubble.

The most senior in the Kings’ roster has been included in the official 15-man lineup of the team heading to Clark Freeport in Pampanga for the Oct. 11 restart of the season.

Coach Tim Cone said Caguioa, 40, the 2012 MVP, remains in shape despite the league going on a long, six-month break following the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

“Mark is working hard along with his teammates to get himself in shape,” said Cone on Sunday.

Just a few days ago, Caguioa paid tribute to recently retired Magnolia guard Peter June Simon, who he referred to as ‘my only batchmate left from 2001 draft.’

Caguioa was selected by Barangay Ginebra as the No. 3 pick overall in 2001 in a draft that featured a current PBA head coach (Topex Robinson of Phoenix), an assistant coach (Mon Jose of Magnolia), league broadcaster (Dominic Uy), and even a city mayor (Francis Zamora of San Juan).

Prior to the start of the season and the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Caguioa decided to return for one more season – his 19th – for the Kings shortly after the franchise won the Governors Cup title.

With the exception of Slaughter, currently in the US after failing to have a contract agreement with the team, Cone said Ginebra will have the same intact lineup that won the season-ending conference against the Meralco Bolts.

“Greg (Slaughter) is not on the list and will not play in the bubble,” said the champion coach. “Otherwise, we are an intact team from the last championship back in January.”

But going with the Kings in Clark as they vie to win their first All-Filipino title since the 2007 season are their three rookies in Jerrick Balanza, Arvin Tolentino and Kent Salado.
