PUREFOODS Star playmaker Mark Barroca only scored four points on Wednesday night - but one basket may end up in any compilation of all the highlight-reel shots in the PBA this season.
With the shot clock winding down, the 5-foot-10 Barroca got the rebound after import Denzel Bowles’ desperation three-point attempt only hit the side of the board. He had the presence of mind to flip the ball with his back to the basket, in the hope that it would hit the rim and reset the shot clock.
Instead, the ball took an odd bounce in the rim before trickling in, giving Purefoods Star a 97-89 lead with under 50 seconds to go.
“Instinct na lang siguro kasi siyempre, three seconds na lang (in the shot clock). Eh di tumama sa ring, and wala nang oras yun kung iikot pa ako so inisip ko, itama ko na lang sa ring,” Barroca said shortly after the 100-94 Purefoods win over Talk 'N Text the start of their semifinal series on Wednesday.
“Tinapon ko lang ng ganun, tapos takbo na lang ako kasi baka mag-fastbreak na sila (Tropang Texters). Eh alam mo naman, atake sila ng atake.”

Asked if he makes those kinds of difficult shots during practice, Barroca said the closest thing he did was to repeatedly work on the reverse layup.
“Iyung reverse ginagawa ko. Nagulat lang talaga ako kasi ang goal ko lang tumama sa ring 'yung bola para makuha yung offensive rebound,” he said.
Bowles described Barroca’s circus shot as the “back-breaker."
“That’s (Barroca’s last-second heave) crazy, but that helped us out because they (Tropang Texters) were coming back, and that broke their backs,” said Bowles, who scored a new PBA perspnal-best 49 points to lead the Hotshots to a 1-0 series lead.
