UNTIL now, Maria Gracia Gonzales-Cadiz is still surprised with how fate has turned her from a full-time mom and housewife into an online singing sensation in a matter of days.
Cadiz said she is still overwhelmed with the response to her own version of the ode to the Barangay Ginebra squad composed by Gary Granada, after the video of her covers became viral online.
“Parang hanggang ngayon, pakiramdam ko, nananaginip lang ako,” said Cadiz in an interview with SPIN.ph.
On Tuesday following Ginebra’s practice at the Upper Deck gym in Pasig, Cadiz continued to live the dream of a die-hard fan when she was given a Barangay Ginebra personalized jersey by the team’s official outfitter World Balance. She also got jerseys of Jayjay Helterbrand and Chris Ellis, two of her crushes in the team.
Last Sunday, Cadiz’s wildest dream also came true when she was able to sing her version of 'Sana Manalo ang Ginebra' in front of 20,000 fans at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum during the halftime break of Game Four of the PBA Governors’ Cup finals.
Cadiz, who was once a singer when she worked in South Korea, said it was a dream to perform at the Big Dome.
“Sa harapan ng more than 20,000, iba ‘yung pakiramdam,” Cadiz said. “Tapos naririnig mo na sumasabay sila sa kanta. Hindi ko ma-imagine ‘yung mga pakiramdam ko nung oras na ‘yun. Para akong lumulutang sa ere.”
“Ang saya saya ko na na-reach ko na ‘yung isa sa mga nasa bucket list ko,” she added.
Cadiz, who was also featured by GMA’s news magazine program Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho, admitted she was nervous before she performed on the court, but calmed down thanks to Ginebra’s big lead at the break.
“Bago mag-start, kinakabahan ako na nasusuka. Nung tumungtong na ako sa court, medyo nawala na ‘yung kaba ko eh. Nakatulong ‘yung game nila na nakalamang sila ng malaki, nawala ‘yung kaba ko,” he said.
Kenneth Cadiz, Marge’s husband, was also instrumental in making the viral cover of the Barangay Ginebra’s ode by Granada. He said they tried to make the lyrics as catchy as possible.
“Hangga’t maaari, dapat catchy. Ang Ginebra fans, ‘yun ang masa kaya dapat alam mo ‘yung target mo. Maganda naman ‘yung kinalabasan,” he said.
Of course, bashers came along with Cadiz’s new-found popularity. But Kenneth said Ginebra fans were also quick to defend the online singing sensation.
“May mga nagba-bash sa kanya. Sinasabi ko, hindi mo na kailangan mag-comment. Nung nakita ko ‘yung isang basher, ang kapalit 10,000 na supporters kaya sabi ko, ‘Tignan mo, kahit hindi ka magsalita, ‘yung mga supporters na ‘yung nagsasalita,’” said Kenneth, who was once a member of a band as a vocalist during his younger days.
Like Marge, Kenneth said he was also overwhelmed with the response, while thanking the Ginebra fans for making it all possible.
“Nakaka-overwhelm na hanggang ngayon, hindi pa kami maka-move on dun sa nangyari. Proud ako sa mga fans ng Ginebra kasi sila ‘yung nagbitbit sa amin sa stage na ‘to,” he said.
