Blackwater seeks temporary relief after tapping Marcus Douthit for injured import Chris Charles

BLACKWATER is set to tap the services of naturalized big man Marcus Douthit in the ongoing PBA Commissioner’s Cup in lieu of injured import Chris Charles.

Team owner Dioceldo Sy said management decided to bring in the 6-foot-10 Gilas Pilipinas stalwart in order to give the 7-foot Charles more time to recuperate from a left hamstring injury he suffered prior to the start of the mid-season conference.

"Yes, we're getting Douthit. We're just finalizing the details, but we already got the permission from Mr. MVP (Manny V. Pangilinan)," Sy told Spin.ph.

Since Douthit signed a one-year extension with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), which no less than Pangilinan headed, Sy said the team sought first the approval of the Talk `N Text team owner.

Douthit has been Gilas Pilipinas' main big man for the last three years, being an integral part of the national team that finished runner-up in the 2013 Fiba Asia Men's Championship in Manila.

The New York native already joined the Elite's practice on Thursday and will be available to play on nSunday when they face Talk 'N Text.

Sunday's game is in Binan, Laguna.

“Nagpasukat na kanina at nag-shoot around. Tomorrow (Friday), full blast practice na si Marcus," added Sy.

Blackwater opened its Commissioner's Cup campaign with a 92-70 loss to barako Bull on Wednesday with the injured Charles failing to play.

The 34-year-old Douthit is no longer new to the league’s brand of play, having suited up  for Air21 during the 2012 Commissioner's Cup when he submitted averages of 20.3 points, 20.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists in nine games.

Sy is convinced the veteran big man can contribute to the team's cause, while hopeful the Elite can finally nail their first-ever win as a PBA franchise this Sunday.

"Marcus is not flashy but can provide steady 20points and 15 rebounds. That's easy for him because he is used to the PBA brand of play already," he added.
