MARCIO Lassiter welcomed the relatively deeper rotation that coach Leo Austria turned to in San Miguel Beer’s 104-96 win over Phoenix on Sunday night in the two teams' PBA Philippine Cup debut.
Known for his tight rotation that only has seven players at most, Austria surprised fans when he fielded 13 players in their season-opener, although the starters still saw action for at least 34 minutes each.
“It’s great, I love it. I loved to see that,” Lassiter, who played nearly 37 minutes, said. “Guys are gonna step up more and we just gotta keep getting used to putting more guys in, and keep playing our system with the new players.”
Matt Ganuelas-Rosser played the most off the bench with 16 minutes, sophomore guard Von Pessumal saw almost 13 minutes, while veterans Chico Lanete and Billy Mamaril played over 11 minutes each.
After the bench provided quality minutes, the powerhouse core of June Mar Fajardo, Alex Cabagnot, Chris Ross, Arwind Santos, and Lassiter finished the job with a late run in the payoff period.
“We just attacked them,” Lassiter said. “They were pressing us. They gave us a lot of opportunities to get some easy points. We knew we had June Mar down there so it’s a tough cover for them size-wise. Players stepped up and made shots and that’s pretty much what happened in the fourth quarter.”
“We just gotta continue to play our brand and there’s a lot of errors we can work on,” he added. “We just gotta continue to work on those things.”
