Lassiter says remarkable three-point shooting meaningless after sorry SMB loss

    Jul 4, 2015
Marcio Lassiter did a salute after hitting one of his PBA playoff-tying high 10 three-pointers.

MARCIO Lassiter rued his crucial error that negated his hot shooting and led to San Miguel Beer losing to Rain or Shine, 113-110, in Game Two of their PBA Governors’ Cup semifinal series on Saturday night.

The SMB sniper was in the zone in the second half, where he fired all but three of his 31 points, and buried a league playoff-tying high 10 three-pointers.

But with the game tied at 110, Lassiter, off a timeout, made a bad entry pass intended to import AZ Reid, leading to a steal by Wendell McKines and the game-winning triple by Jeff Chan.

“We were going to post to AZ, but they made a good read on it and they stole the ball,” Lassiter said.

That put to naught an amazing shooting night for the Gilas Pilipinas prospect, who missed only three of his attempts from beyond the arc.

One of his conversions came at the seven-minute, 48-second mark as he gave the Beermen a seemingly insurmountable lead at 101-87.

“During the time when I was shooting I was just, if I can get a good clear sight of the rim, I feel like every shot is a good shot for me,” Lassiter said. “Credit to my teammates, they found me.”

“But all that doesn't really matter,” he was quick to add. “I could score so many points but we don't win. There's just no meaning to no one. You don't get remembered for losing so I just want to win.”

“We didn’t get stops,” Lassiter continued.

The Beermen particularly failed to put the clamps on Mckines, who exploded for a league-season-high 53 points.

“Obviously we didn't come close to stopping him.”

The Beermen still had the chance to force overtime when they gained the final possession, but it resulted in a contested double-pump attempt by Alex Cabagnot that bounced off the rim.

Would Lassiter have taken the last shot?

Not if they had been making stops down the stretch.

“It shouldn't have come down to that shot.”
