THE PBA is asking teams and league staff to be very mindful of health protocols as it explained that the league is working out a season resumption that is quite different from the NBA.

While the system for the NBA bubble at Disney Resort in Orlando is being touted as one of the safest, PBA commissioner Willie Marcial said the local league is looking to replicate the protocols of other leagues where players still travel from their homes to the venues and back.

“Hindi tayo magho-hotel na parang NBA,” said Marcial on Tuesday during the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum via video conference. “Kailangan disiplina ka talaga.”

Japeth Aguilar of Barangay Ginebra and Rain or Shine rookie Adrian Wong last week were fined P20,000 each and told to undergo COVID-19 testing after playing in a five-a-side scrimmage in violation of the government's quarantine rules.

The PBA is planning for a possible resumption of the season, as the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Disease (IATF) has allowed the resumption of practices for the 12 teams. The PBA is planning to submit a letter to the government agency on August, requesting that teams may be allowed to hold scrimmages.

A number of sports venues are being used as quarantine facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic and Marcial said the PBA is looking at Smart-Araneta Coliseum, which has protocols in place as far as holding events are concerned., as the site for the resumption of the games if given the go-signal by the IATF.

“Kinakausap na natin ang Araneta kasi ‘yung MOA, ginagamit sa COVID,” said Marcial.

“May sarili silang protocols, may protocols din ang GAB, may protocols din tayo. Kung may kulang, dadagdagan. Mas maraming protocols, mas mabuti para sa atin,” said Marcial.

The PBA commissioner said testing will continue during the resumption of the matches, similar to that during practices where swab tests will be implemented every 10 days.

“May testing tayo every 10 days. Hindi kaya ng everyday ‘yun dahil may incubation period. Kunwari, mag-test ka ngayon tapos negative. After five days saka ka tatamaan ng positive. Sa akin, hindi advisable ‘yung araw-araw kasi may incubation period,” Marcial said.
