SAN Mig Coffee is on the threshold of a rare PBA grand slam but Marc Pingris does not want to get ahead of himself.
As talk in basketball town shifted to a grand slam after San Mig survived a tough semifinal series against Talk 'N Text with a 93-87 victory on Friday night, Pingris prefers to focus on Game One and nothing more.
“Unang-una, gusto naming makuha ‘yung Game One dahil sabi ni coach (Tim Cone), importante ang Game One. Kailangan naming mag-focus. Hindi namin iisipin na three-peat kami,” Pingris said.
In the meantime, the Gilas mainstay is looking forward to a rare break while San Mig awaits the result of the other PBA Governors Cup semifinal series between Alaska and Rain or Shine.
That playoff will also go down to a Game Five on Saturday at the Big Dome, creating a lull for San Mig which Pingris hopes to use to recharge and heal after a tough playoff against the Texters.
“May pagkakataon kaming magpahinga bukas para makapaghanda. Nandyan na ‘yan eh (injuries). Bukas, may pagkakataon mag-rehab, ganun lang,” said Pingris, who finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
James Yap had 25 points on 5-of-9 shooting from beyong the three-point arc while Marcus Barkley added 21 markers and Joe Devance his first career triple-double for San Mig.
But Pingris said more than anything else, it was the defense that pulled them through.
“Lumabas lahat na willing mag-depensa. ‘Yun naman ‘yung makikita na kailangan gawin, pagsipagan sa depensa. ‘Yun ang puhunan namin kung bakit kami andito. Dahil sa depensa,” said Pingris.
