THE waiting game begins for Barangay Ginebra as forward Jamie Malonzo suffered an injury a few seconds left in the Kings’ 95-88 win over Northport in the PBA Philippine Cup Sunday night at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
The 6-foot-7 Fil-Am just fell by his lonesome in the final two seconds of the game and stayed sitting on the floor for about 10 minutes as the rest of the Kings gathered around him obviously concerned on what befell their 27-year-old teammate.
He was later carried out on the floor by Sidney Onwubere and Raymond Aguilar on the way to the Ginebra dugout.
Coach Tim Cone said the team is still clueless on the injury of Malonzo, who finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists in Ginebra’s second straight win and a third running 5-3 record.
“We don’t know what exactly it is yet, but he need to be carried off the floor after the game. He can’t put weight on his leg so we will see what’s going on,” said Cone during the post-game presser.
“Here’s hoping that it’s not too serious, so we’ll see.”
Malonzo also had to be carried out on the way to the parking area as he limped his way out of the Ginebra dugout.
Cone doesn’t want to put a grim scenario on the Fil-Am’s health condition, but mentioned it could either be a calf or Achilles issue.
“But I’m not a doctor so I don’t want to make a prognosis,” he said.
What’s apparent though, is Malonzo could be grounded for the next few days, according to Cone.
“At this point, he may be out for a few days, and hopefully does not stretch out into weeks or months. We can’t afford to lose him,” said Cone of the Gilas Pilipinas stalwart.
The Kings’ next game won’t be until Friday night at the Philsports Arena when they go up against the TNT Tropang Giga.
