Cone expecting 'tough match-ups' as Ginebra backcourt takes on Terrence Romeo and Co.

    Nov 25, 2015

BARANGAY Ginebra’s struggling backcourt goes under the microscope anew when it matches up against GlobalPort's dynamic guards on Wednesday night in the Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

The Gin Kings’ main guard rotation of LA Tenorio, Mark Caguioa, and Sol Mercado have been performing below expectations so far in the all-Filipino conference, providing little support to big men Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar.

It's the young guns Scottie Thompson and Nico Salva who have been repaying coach Tim Cone's faith, making the most of the time they get off the bench.

But the veteran playmakers are expected to deliver this time, particularly on the defensive end, as they try to hold their own against a Batang Pier side featuring the league’s most explosive backcourt duo in Terrence Romeo and Stanley Pringle, not to mention Joseph Yeo.

“Global certainly poses a lot of problems for us with their quick guards and their physical frontline,” Cone said ahead of the 7 p.m. encounter. “Tough matchups for us.”

But Ginebra is eager to sustain its surge, gunning for a third straight win and fourth overall in seven games that would put them above .500 for the first time this season-opening conference.

“This is a key game for us as we try to gather some momentum in the middle of this eliminations,” Cone said.

The Batang Pier, on the other hand, is gunning for a fourth win in six games as they hope to bounce back strong after suffering a 123-104 beating at the hands of Alaska last Friday.
