SAN Miguel and Magnolia clash even as Rain or Shine and TNT face off on Saturday in matches vital for playoff positioning in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Beermen and the Hotshots square off in the Petron Saturday Special at 6:45 p.m., while the Elastopainters and the KaTropa battle at 4:30 p.m. at the Big Dome.
Already assured of a quarterfinal berth, San Miguel, which holds a 6-4 win-loss record, can still reach No. 5 with a win over Magnolia but also face the danger of finishing at No. 7 with a defeat depending on the losing margin.
The game has much importance for Magnolia, which needs to win by 14 points or more to clinch the sixth-seed and play in a best-of-three series against the team that finishes third place at the end of the elimination round.
A loss or even a Magnolia victory by a winning margin of 13 points or less will drop the Hotshots to seventh, which means they will have to win twice over second-seed Alaska to advance to the semifinals.
The Elastopainters, on the other hand, have already clinched the top seed as they hold a 9-1 win-loss record. Even with the first place in the bag, Rain or Shine would want to extend its winning streak to seven games entering the playoffs.
TNT holds a 7-3 win-loss card, and a win will cement the third seed for KaTropa. A loss though will drop TNT in a tie with Meralco and San Miguel, with Meralco getting the No. 3 spot, TNT No. 4, and San Miguel No. 5.
