MAGNOLIA jumped to an early lead and never looked back to beat Barangay Ginebra, 106-77, on Monday and force a sudden-death match in their PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinal series at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Hotshots started the game with an 11-0 blast and were never seriously threatened from there as they atoned for a lopsided defeat in Game One and tied the best-of-three series at 1-all.
The do-or-die game for a place in the semifinals will be played on Wednesday, also at the Big Dome.
Ian Sangalang topscored with 21 points to go with nine rebounds while Robbie Herndon added 18 points as the Hotshots spread the scoring and got double-figure outputs from six players.
Mark Barroca, Jio Jalalon, and Paul Lee, who struggled from the field in Game One, combined for 38 points.
The Hotshots outscored the Kings, 55-39, in the second half.
“We only tied the series,” said Magnolia coach Chito Victolero. “Na-challenge ‘yung mga players ko. Pinagusapan namin ‘yung spirit namin at passion namin nung Game One, it’s not the Magnolia Hotshots basketball. Nakita naman nila sa film.”
Sol Mercado was the lone double-digit scorer for Ginebra with 13 points as the Kings struggled after dominating Game One.
LA Tenorio, Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar scored just five points each.
