CONVERGE and Blackwater go for a share of the lead in their respective groups when they battle separate opponents in the PBA 50th Season Governors’ Cup on Friday in the league’s first stop at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium this conference.
Here is a preview.
MACAU VS. CONVERGE
When: Friday, July 17. 5:15 p.m.
Where: Ninoy Aquino Stadium
Share of lead in Group A
Converge eyes joint first place in Group A with NLEX in its clash against Macau on Friday. The FiberXers are coming off a close 105-103 win over Terrafirma last Wednesday for their second straight win.
In search of first win
Macau tries to claim that first win again on Friday against Converge. Unlike in its first game where they were blown out by NLEX, 114-75, Macau made the game competitive against San Miguel before eventually losing, 123-109. The Giant Pandas hope to close it out this time if the opportunity arises.
Welcome boost from Kobey
One of the reasons why Macau came out with a better performance was the play of Kobey Lam. After scoring just four points in his PBA return, Lam had 22 points against San Miguel. If Lam contributes at the same rate, it will help Macau’s chances of winning.
Jalen must bounce back
Converge won last Saturday even with the struggles of Jalen Hudson. The FiberXers import only had two points while shooting just 1-of-14 from the field. While the locals have been carrying the load, Hudson must do his share - for his sake.
BLACKWATER VS. MAGNOLIA
When: Friday, July 17. 7:30 p.m.
Where: Ninoy Aquino Stadium
Bossing in search of second win
Blackwater eyes another victory on Friday when it battles Magnolia. The Bossing pulled off a shocker to start the conference by defeating Rain or Shine, 131-108. They will look for a second upset against Magnolia. A win will put Blackwater in the early lead in Group B.
Hotshots look to avoid 0-2 hole
Magnolia got off to a slow start in the conference when the Hotshots were defeated by Phoenix Super LPG, 98-86. KJ Buffen had a decent start for Magnolia with 15 points and 12 rebounds, but shot only 6-of-16 (38 percent) from the field. They will look to bounce back in against the Bossing.
Barkley also has support
Kentrell Barkley started his stint in the PBA on an impressive note when he had 29 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists. But Barkley also has support from the locals led by Sedrick Barefield and RK Ilagan. Barefield had 24 points, three rebounds, and three assists, while Ilagan had 22 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. If Blackwater continues to get production from them, it could be a tough night for Magnolia.
