Magnolia has come back thrice from 0-2 down. Can Hotshots do it again?

MAGNOLIA is down 0-2 in its best-of-seven finals series against San Miguel in the PBA 48th Season Commissioner’s Cup.

But if there is a team which know how to climb out of such hole, it’s the Hotshots.

According to PBA statistics chief Fidel Mangonon, nine teams have won a series after being down 0-2, and three of those were done by the Magnolia/Purefoods franchise.

2019 PBA PHILIPPINE CUP

The last time Magnolia faced San Miguel in the finals was in the 2019 Philippine Cup, and the Hotshots arranged that showdown by overcoming a 0-2 deficit. Magnolia was two games behind against Rain or Shine in their semifinal series, losing by an average margin of 10 points. But Magnolia went on to win the next three games and later, the series in Game Seven with a 63-60 overtime victory with Ian Sangalang finishing with 11 points and 15 rebounds, and Rafi Reavis tallying eight points, 20 rebounds, and three blocks.

    2006 PBA PHILIPPINE CUP

    Purefooods Chunkee Giants fell behind 0-2 against Alaska, and even 1-3 in its 2006 Philippine Cup semifinal series, but the team led by James Yap, Marc Pingris, and Kerby Raymundo came back to win the last three games including a close 90-89 victory in Game Seven. The Giants later won the title, defeating Red Bull Barako.

    2002 PBA GOVERNORS’ CUP

    Purefoods also dug itself out of a 0-2 hole in the finals, doing so in the PBA Governors’ Cup in 2002. The Hotdogs dropped a 106-102 double-overtime defeat to the Alaska Aces in Game Two, but claimed a 3-2 lead in the series with the help of import Derrick Brown, who collected 46 points in their 82-76 win.

    Purefoods took Game Seven, 91-76, with Brown and Kevin Price finishing with 21 and 19 points apiece, and Kerby Raymundo, Rey Evangelista, Ronnie Magsanoc, and Alvin Patrimonio combining for 49 points in the clincher.
