MAC Baracael is hitting two birds with one stone by not only finding a way to beat the horrendous Manila traffic, but also getting extra workout.

The GlobalPort forward has been using a fatbike to get to and from Batang Pier practice at the Gatorade Hoops Center in Mandaluyong, which is just near his home.

“Sobrang lapit nung condo ko eh, dyan lang ako sa taas,” Baracael said in a short chat with SPIN.ph shortly after arriving to GlobalPort practice on his wheels. “Tapos after pa ng practice, sobrang traffic, so naisip ko mag-bike na lang.”

The six-year veteran disclosed that he bought his bike, which has the distinction of having oversized tires, two years ago for over P100,000 at a bike shop in Ortigas.

And he insists his investment was worth it.

“Sa akin, parang sulit naman, kasi nung time na kinuha ko yun, medyo yung tuhod ko, medyo may pain eh, so nung nagba-bike na ako ng madalas, nawala na,” Baracael said.

Plus, he won’t have to pay for extra workout anymore.

“Kapag hindi ako nakakapag-work out, nagba-bike na lang ako,” the 32-year-old cager said. “Yun na lang ang pinaka-maintenance ko.”

“Hindi kasi ako masyado naggy-gym, so yun na lang yung (workout sa) legs ko, papunta sa oval ng Ultra,” he added.

Ginebra star Jayjay Helterbrand also tried to ride a bike to and from practice a few years ago, turning to a folding bike.

For Baracael, his fatbike also adds “pogi points.”

“Same lang naman (sa normal bike). Pag tinignan mo lang siya, medyo cool, kasi mapapatingin ka, ‘Ang laki naman ng gulong nung bike na yun,’” the Far Eastern University product said.

So let’s see if his cross training translates into a rejuvenated performance on the court for the Batang Pier.
