TERRENCE Romeo never lost confidence after misfiring from deep early in GlobalPort’s 118-116 overtime victory over Mahindra on Saturday in the PBA Philippine Cup.
The Batang Pier missed his first 12 three-point attempts, but had the same faith in his next try that proved to be “Lucky 13th” as it knotted the count at 113.
“Hindi ako nag-da-doubt sa sarili ko eh, kahit na marami akong isablay or talagang hindi ako maka-shoot,” Romeo said. “Iniisip ko lang na kahit anong kalabasan nung game – kahit matapos ‘to na ako yung nagpatalo – tatanggapin ko as long as every time na mapupunta sa akin yung bola, ititira’t-itititra ko or gagawin ko yung tamang decision.”
The reigning Most Improve Player shot a paltry 5-of-22 from the field overall.
Despite his shooting woes, Romeo still flirted with a triple-double of 29 points, 10 boards, and eight assists as he made his living through the foul line where he made 18 of 21 attempts.
With his shooting far from target early, Romeo flashed his playmaking ability, with Stanley Pringle as his usual recipient.
“Alam ko ng hindi ako maka-shoot tapos si Stanley maiinit, so talagang sinabi ko sa kanya na sa’yo ko ibibigay tapos ikaw na bahala,” Romeo said of his backcourt partner, who also put up an all-round showing with 29 points, eight boards, and seven assists.
“Kasi yung depensa masyadong naka-focus sa akin, so talagang every time na hawak ko yung bola, hindi pa ako umaatake, naka-collapse na sila,” he added. “Ginawa ko na lang na hanapin 'yung teammates ko, umaatake ako at kini-kick out ko yung bola para lumuwang yung depensa.”
Romeo just assumed the responsibility again when it mattered most.
“Mas mapapadali sana kung nahihit ko yung mga tira ko, kasi mas malilito na sila kung paano ako bantayan, pero thank God pa rin dahil na-save niya yung best for last.”
