Like good soldier, Capacio steps aside for Baculi

    Jan 3, 2013

GLENN Capacio said Globalport has nowhere to go but up following the official appointment of Junel Baculi as head coach of the PBA's newest ballclub.

Capacio, who served as coach on an interim basis during the Batang Pier's campaign in the Philippine Cup, firmly believes the franchise’s rough start to its first season in the pro league has nonetheless strengthened the team's bond.

“Mas okay na kasi ang samahan ng team. Siguro adjustment na lang ni coach Junel with the players ang kailangan. Siyempre, may ibang system na ipapasok si coach Junel,” Capacio told Spin.ph minutes after Baculi’s official announcement was made on Thursday.

The 48-year-old Capacio admitted moving down as assistant coach was something he prepared for even before he accepted the coaching job of Globalport during the Philippine Cup.

“Di ko pa ngayon alam ano plano ni coach Junel sa akin kung ako ba magiging lead assistant, pero ako naman, alam ko na naman before na interim (coaching) basis lang ako sa team,” he said.

As Baculi presides over the team’s first practice of the year on Friday at the Moro Lorenzo gym inside the Ateneo campus, Capacio said the bemoustached PBA mentor will have to instill a defensive mindset on the Batang Pier considering their anemic 1-13 record in their very first tournament.

Capacio added that recruiting a tall and dominant import for the Commissioner’s Cup can solve the team’s rebounding woes since Globalport has an array of shooters who can take care of scoring.
