Liam McMorrow expresses interest in becoming naturalized player for Gilas Pilipinas

    Jun 7, 2015

LIAM McMorrow’s love for the Philippines is getting stronger.

Proof he’s getting comfortable in his stay in the country, the towering Barako Bull import has entertained thoughts of becoming a candidate for naturalization with Gilas Pilipinas.

“I’m thinking about it,” McMorrow said on Sunday after the Energy’s 123-114 win over Globalport in the PBA Governors Cup. “That’d be cool, because I love it here. This is the best place I’ve played so far.”

“That’d be a nice option,” the 7-foot-2 Canadian slotman added. “I’d love to play at that national level.”

The national team, however, already has two naturalized players in Andray Blatche and Marcus Douthit, with only one of them allowed to suit up for the country under Fiba rules.

“We’ll see,” said McMorrow, who continued to show his pedigree at the club level by scattering 41 points, 27 rebounds, three steals, two assists, and one block in 46 minutes to power the Energy past the Batang Pier.

Speaking of the club level, reaching the NBA is also a goal.

“Definitely, I want to play there,” McMorrow said. “So everywhere I go, I got to show them (scouts) that I can play better. It’s all stepping stones, trying my best to show them what I can do.”

But the ever-smiling giant is focused on leading Barako to the Promised Land at the moment.

“I just want to win a championship,” he said. “Everywhere I go, I want to win a championship. I got a championship stolen from me in Canada, right? So I’m trying to get that here.”
