SAN Miguel Beer coach Leo Austria lamented how the team settled for too many jump shots in a 99-84 loss to Rain or Shine in the Smart Bro-PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday night.
The reigning champion shot an unacceptable 7-of-35 clip from beyond the three-point arc – a far cry from the Elasto Painters’ 45-percent (13-of-29) shooting from long distance – as they veered away from feeding main big man June Mar Fajardo down low.
Arwind Santos, particularly, missed nine of his 11 attempts from three-point territory, while Alex Cabagnot missed seven of his nine.
“Masyado kaming na-in love sa three-points namin,” Austria said as his team suffered its first loss in three games. “We never executed our plays, especially June Mar getting the ball at the post.”
“Our strength is not in our outside shooting,” he added. “We should get the ball to our big man.”
Fajardo registered 13 points and 10 boards, but only had seven attempts as the reigning league MVP made his living at the foul line where he made 7 of his 12 attempts.
The Beermen shot 23 percent (31-of-96) overall, the misses translating into transition points for the E-Painters.
“We took a lot of bad shots,” Austria said. “That’s why they were able to run. And we missed a lot of point-blank layups.”
“I think that was a wake-up call for us,” he added. “We were expecting Rain or Shine will come out really strong. I have to give the credit to coach Yeng (Guiao).”
