MARK Romero said he is used to being underappreciated, ever since he was a backup at Far Eastern University, and considered the PBA Draft as another big challenge after being picked next to last by Kia at No. 40 last month.

The College of St. Benilde star said he felt he should have been picked drafted earlier and was surprised that little-known players were taken ahead of him.

But Romero, one of the notable players in this year’s draft, was simply happy to not be left out. Forty-one players were drafted from the pool of 87.

“If you see the draft class, maraming nandun na parang ‘oh, bakit nandun siya?’” Romero told to Spin.ph.

“Actually, I was expecting some teams to pick me up, pero they did pass on me. But it’s okay.”

“’Yun0 yung fate ko eh, so I just have to face it,” he said. “Siguro yun yung challenge sa akin ni God, kasi lagi naman ako, since before, since I was in FEU, lagi akong ganun, lagi akong underdog. There are no expectations.”

“Pero I’m really grateful na na-draft pa rin ako,” the versatile cager was quick to add. “And grateful to be drafted by an expansion team.”

“I need to prove myself pa siguro.”
